IUI for PCOS

The advanced therapy of IUI for PCOS helps women overcome infertility

For millions of women in this country, polycystic ovary syndrome, PCOS, wreaks havoc on their bodies and makes getting pregnant difficult. As an expert in this condition, Dr. Joel Batzofin, our PCOS doctor, has created a clinic designed to provide specialized care for women and teens with PCOS. In our Manhattan fertility center, we offer personalized treatment plans to help you control your PCOS symptoms and, when you are ready, achieve a successful pregnancy. Intrauterine insemination, or IUI for PCOS, is a front-line treatment.

Understanding how PCOS impacts fertility

Typically, PCOS is identified by the cluster of symptoms that commonly occur, including irregular periods, excess male hormones (leading to abnormal hair growth and acne) and polycystic ovaries. Women with PCOS may not know they have the condition until they try unsuccessfully to get pregnant. Infertility is another symptom of PCOS.

In our PCOS clinic, Dr. Batzofin will conduct a thorough assessment to understand your specific situation. By taking a complete medical history, ordering blood work and performing a physical exam and ultrasound, we can determine the best course of action and create an individualized treatment plan.

With PCOS, women have a higher than normal level of male hormones in their bodies. This hormone imbalance interferes with regular menstrual cycles. Often, women with PCOS do not ovulate, making conception without intervention difficult, if not impossible. Dr. Batzofin will often recommend a weight loss strategy, consultation with our in-house nutritionist, hormone therapy with metformin and ovulation induction to help PCOS patients who want to get pregnant. Usually, Dr. Batzofin starts with oral medication such as Clomid. If this treatment alone doesn’t work, he may suggest IUI for PCOS.

Exploring IUI for PCOS

To offer the best chance for success, our PCOS doctor may suggest combining ovulation induction with IUI. In these cases, Dr. Batzofin will prescribe a fertility medication and then monitor your cycle closely to make sure the eggs reach maturity and that your ovaries are not overstimulated. Before the IUI, we will explain the procedure for obtaining the semen sample, either from your partner or through a sperm donor.

At the appropriate time, Dr. Batzofin will then place the prepared sperm directly into your uterus through a catheter. The IUI procedure takes only a few minutes in our Manhattan fertility center office and causes minimal discomfort. You will rest for 10 to 15 minutes afterward and then return home, resuming your normal activity after 24 hours.
