Let’s be honest, ladies: Sex is no fun if it hurts. For many women, the problem is vaginal dryness and discomfort, which can come along with menopause and childbirth and have a big impact on relationships and quality of life. Thankfully, a new treatment called MonaLisa Touch can help resolve this condition, known as vaginal atrophy, in just a few visits to our New York fertility center.
As women approach menopause – and sometimes after childbirth, during breastfeeding or after breast cancer treatment – estrogen levels drop. Everyone talks about the hot flashes, but one of the less-discussed effects of declining estrogen is atrophic vaginitis, which often causes sex to become painful.
So, what’s going on in there? Declining estrogen causes the lining of the vagina, called the vaginal mucosa, to become thin, dry, fragile and less elastic. No wonder sexual intercourse becomes painful, which can make some women want to avoid it altogether.
Hormone therapy can help, but it’s not for everyone. The new MonaLisa Touch laser treatment, available at our New York fertility center, gives women another option.
For the MonaLisa Touch treatment, Dr. Batzofin uses a special fractional CO2 laser to revitalize the vaginal mucosa and restore normal vaginal conditions. It works by re-activating the production of new collagen in the vaginal walls.
Most women begin seeing benefits after only one twenty minute treatment.
The outpatient MonaLisa Touch treatments are virtually painless, with no anesthesia required. Three treatments are recommended, six weeks apart, followed by an annual maintenance treatment. Most women experience only temporary side effects, such as slight redness or swelling.
