Because we understand that our patients want to cover all their bases when it comes to infertility treatment, Dr. Joel Batzofin, at our established Manhattan fertility clinic, continuously investigates new options, as well as ancient therapies. Based on thorough research and proven results, Dr. Batzofin believes acupuncture may serve as a good complement to the traditional treatments we offer in our fertility clinic.
Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine treatment, involves placing special needles along the body’s meridians that link to the reproductive system. In infertility treatment, the goal of acupuncture is to improve circulation, regulate hormones and reduce inflammation. Additionally, acupuncture aids in relaxation, which may reduce the production of stress hormones.
If you have certain structural problems or damage to your reproductive organs, acupuncture will not be a successful standalone treatment for infertility. However, our Manhattan fertility specialist recommends using acupuncture in certain cases in conjunction with other fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or ovulation stimulation.
Acupuncture augments treatment for fertility issues in females such as luteal phase defects and unexplained infertility. It can enhance the success of ovulation stimulation, and when paired with in-vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, initial results show acupuncture to be effective.
One study reviewed seven different clinical trials in which acupuncture was administered within one day of the embryo transfer for women undergoing IVF. The reviewers’ findings indicated that acupuncture, utilized in combination with IVF treatments, increased the odds of pregnancy. Researchers believe that more studies need to be conducted to confirm these results.
Acupuncture treatments may also offer benefits for male infertility, particularly when sperm quality creates an issue. A study found that men with unexplained (idiopathic) male infertility who underwent acupuncture treatment twice a week for five weeks had an increase in the number of normal sperm, as well as a reduction in structural abnormalities in their sperm.
At our Manhattan fertility clinic, we understand that our patients want to maximize their chances for success. That said, please do not add herbal supplements or begin acupuncture without consulting your physician.
