More women today are delaying pregnancy in order to pursue other professional or social goals.

options for egg freezing in NYCThanks to technological advances in medicine, these women no longer have to worry about a decline in the viability of their eggs while they wait for the right time to start a family. Learn more about the cryopreservation options offered by your infertility clinic by reading over this introduction to egg freezing.

Ovarian Stimulation
Cryopreservation or egg freezing is a method that allows women to achieve pregnancy later in life by placing their eggs in a state of suspended animation. After making the decision to pursue egg freezing and undergoing a series of medical tests, the female patient will be placed on fertility medications in order to enhance the growth and development of the ovarian follicles and control the timing of ovulation.

Egg Retrieval
Once the ovarian stimulation process is complete, a fertility or IVF doctor will retrieve the mature eggs using a small needle directed by ultrasound guidance. This is done in the office setting under anesthesia, on an outpatient basis.  The eggs are then sent to the embryologist for analysis and processing.

The last step of the egg freezing process is known as vitrification, in which the eggs are rapidly frozen within seconds to prevent intracellular ice from forming and the risk of cell damage. Unlike other cryopreservation methods, vitrification rapidly freezes the eggs using a tiny straw filled with vitrification solution before the eggs are stored in liquid nitrogen. In this way, the vitrification egg freezing process improves the post-thaw embryo survival rates. Approximately  90 percent of the eggs will be viable following vitrification.

The best way to determine if egg freezing is the right decision for your needs, is to consult with a fertility clinic.
