Egg Freezing and Long-term Storage

At our New York fertility center, we help women find the best facility for long-term storage after egg freezing

Dr Joel Batzofin of New York Fertility Services is proud to offer women egg freezing services at our New York fertility center. Egg freezing allows women to preserve their fertility so that they can have children later in life, when they are ready. Women in their 20s and 30s who need to delay motherhood due to career concerns or those who are waiting to find their ideal partner may be candidates for egg freezing.

When a woman is in her 20s and 30s, she is at her most fertile. Both the quantity and quality of her eggs decline as she ages, so freezing eggs during those most fertile years can be an ideal solution because we know that younger eggs are more viable and more likely to result in a successful pregnancy.

Egg freezing and long-term storage are proven options for fertility preservation

As of 2012, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine no longer considers egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) to be experimental.  Their guidelines state, “The success of oocyte cryopreservation has improved dramatically over the past decade, and preliminary data for safety are reassuring. Therefore, this technique should no longer be considered experimental.”¹

In addition, vitrification, a state-of-the-art freezing process, has improved outcomes with egg freezing. In fact, an article in the Fertility and Sterility® medical journal summarizes, “There is good evidence that fertilization and pregnancy rates are similar to IVF/ICSI with fresh oocytes when vitrified/warmed oocytes are used as part of IVF/ICSI…”

Of course, egg freezing and long-term storage does not guarantee that women can achieve pregnancy, but it does offer them a viable option to achieve this goal.

Long-term storage after egg freezing

Our New York fertility center does not offer long-term storage for frozen eggs, but our experienced staff works with patients to locate a high-quality long-term egg storage facility. After the egg freezing process takes place at our New York fertility center, if a woman plans to store her eggs, after one year, those eggs are transferred to a long-term storage facility. These credentialed and regulated facilities store eggs and embryos for women until they are ready to have them thawed prior to in-vitro fertilization.
