Male Infertility Treatment

Our Manhattan fertility clinic offers effective treatment for male infertility

Approximately 40% of infertility issues are caused by male infertility factor. The good news is that the treatment of male factor infertility is one of the true success stories in the field of reproductive medicine, and our Manhattan fertility clinic offers men hope through expert evaluation and treatment.

Treatment for male infertility begins with a thorough fertility evaluation.

  • Taking a detailed history to determine if there are medical or genetic conditions, as well as whether or not there may be environmental factors, such as exposure to pesticides, radiation, or cigarette smoke
  • Blood work to check for hormonal issues
  • Most importantly, a semen analysis to investigate the quality and quantity of sperm. As sperm counts can fluctuate quite a lot from one ejaculation to the next, it may be necessary to perform more than one semen analysis, so as to get a good average.

Our experienced Manhattan fertility doctor analyzes the diagnostic results to determine which treatment for male infertility is right for each patient.

Drug therapy—hormonal and non-hormonal—for male infertility

Some cases of male infertility are caused by too much or too little of certain hormones. Problems originating in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland can also cause male infertility. We treat this with hormone therapy or other medications. If the male infertility problem is caused by an infection, we prescribe antibiotics.

Surgical intervention

In rare cases, we may refer you to a urologist for a physical examination and possibly surgery to correct problems such as an undescended testicle, an obstruction or a varicocele.

IUI-related procedures

After an abnormal semen analysis we can use lab techniques to “wash” the seminal plasma and improve the concentration of normally shaped, motile sperm. These sperm are then transferred to the uterus via an intrauterine insemination (IUI). For more severe cases of sperm abnormalities, this treatment is inadequate, and our Manhattan fertility doctor will discuss IVF with you.

IVF-related procedures

The invention of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has revolutionized the treatment of male infertility. Now we can achieve high rates of fertilization in patients who previously would have had little hope of conceiving. This treatment for male infertility is particularly successful for men who have a low sperm count or a blockage in the reproductive tract. During the procedure, a single sperm is injected directly into the egg. After one to five days in the laboratory, the fertilized egg will be transferred to the female’s uterus in a fresh or frozen IVF cycle.

Even men who have a complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate have hope of fathering children through a simple procedure called testicular sperm extraction (TESE). During this procedure, sperm is extracted directly from the testicle. The extracted sperm is used for ICSI, followed by an IVF procedure.
