Fertility Options for Lesbian Couples Includes Using Donor Sperm s
Lesbian couples that wish to begin building their beautiful families have a decision to make about what type of fertility treatment methods are best for their specific needs. Your fertility specialist at New York Fertility Services will partner with you to discuss which option might be the best choice: IUI, IVF or reciprocal IVF.
Your fertility doctor will consider a conception procedure based on your fertility history, medical evaluation, fertility testing for the partner who plans to get pregnant, as well as the couples’ personal preferences.
There are three main fertility options for lesbian couples.
With the IUI procedure, the pregnancy-carrying partner will take medication in order to stimulate production of several eggs in the treatment cycle. The donor sperm is specially prepared in a laboratory to retain only the highest quality sperm. The woman’s fertility doctor then transfers the washed sperm directly into her uterus at the optimal time in her cycle. With more eggs than usual, and more refined sperm than usual, there is a high success rate for pregnancy. This is an outpatient procedure that many consider the first line in fertility treatment for lesbians.
In situations where IUI is unsuccessful or not recommended by your fertility specialist, IVF provides a highly effective alternative. With normal IVF for lesbian couples, the pregnancy-carrying partner goes through an egg retrieval process in which she takes special hormone-regulating medication to stimulate egg growth. Once the eggs are retrieved, they are introduced to active, prepared donor sperm in a controlled IVF lab environment. The embryos that result from the pairing of eggs and donor sperm are then transferred into the woman’s uterus to implant and start the pregnancy.
Reciprocal IVF is a similar process to standard-protocol IVF, with one main difference. In this case, one of the female partners contributes her eggs for fertilization with donor sperm, and the other partner carries the pregnancy. The partner that carries the pregnancy will take part in the IVF process to prepare her uterus for implantation. Reciprocal IVF allows both women to participate in the conception process.
