First Steps: Fertility Testing for Lesbian Couples
For lesbian couples who want to have a baby, there’s much more at stake than the results of a pregnancy test. You and your partner or wife are making a significant investment of time, money and emotion in your fertility treatment, so it’s important to start with as much information as you can. Fertility testing for lesbian couples is a necessary first step that can pinpoint any fertility issues up-front, helping you and your fertility specialist work together to increase your chances of success.
Fertility testing at our LGBT fertility center in NY City can help you and your partner verify your decision about which of you is the best candidate to contribute eggs and/or carry a pregnancy. It also provides valuable information for your fertility specialist to determine which assisted reproductive technologies are most likely to be both effective and cost-effective.
What’s Involved in Fertility Testing for Lesbian Couples
Fertility testing helps you and your partner make informed choices about your next steps so that you can make the most of your time and money as you seek treatment to grow your family.
When you visit our LGBT fertility center in NY City, the partner who plans to carry your baby will be asked to complete a detailed medical history, followed by a comprehensive physical examination. Your reproductive endocrinologist will also order a series of tests that can provide valuable information about which fertility treatment is the best approach to achieve pregnancy.
These tests may include:
- Blood tests to measure levels of hormones that indicate ovarian reserve, or how many eggs the ovaries may be capable of producing
- A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) X-ray to ensure that the fallopian tubes are open and the uterus is normal
- Transvaginal ultrasound using a vaginal probe to look for abnormalities in the reproductive organs, and to evaluate how many follicles, or egg sacs, the ovaries naturally produce
Should this initial round of testing discover any fertility concerns that could make it difficult to achieve pregnancy through intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF), additional tests may be ordered. In some cases, lesbian couples may choose to have the other partner begin the testing process to determine which partner has the greatest chance of having a successful pregnancy.
The Information You Need to Plan Your Family
Establishing baseline measures of fertility helps to ensure that you receive the right fertility treatment for you and your partner, at the right time. Depending on which tests are needed and your health insurance benefits, some fertility testing for lesbian couples may be covered by insurance.
