Tips for Communicating with Your Spouse About Infertility

Infertility can be a very stressful hurdle for a couple to face.

Here are some tips for communicating with your spouse about infertility

First, don’t blame the other person. In the beginning, you might not know who the source of the fertility issue is. In fact, according to a study published in The New York Times, 10 to 30% of infertility cases may be caused by contributing factors from both partners—no matter the cause, it’s important for both partners to be supportive of each other.

Try not to blame yourself. Turn to your spouse when you need reassurance and don’t hesitate to communicate openly. As hard as it is, remember that you probably didn’t do anything to cause your infertility.

Make a decision together about what you want to do. After a visit to an infertility clinic, you’ll be faced with deciding which fertility treatmentsto undergo, and you both need to be on the same page. Discuss IVF, egg donation, and surrogacy, and make sure you’re both in full agreement.

Many women want to talk about their trouble conceiving a child, and many men don’t. Set aside a scheduled amount of time each day to talk about your infertility issues, and stick to that time limit.

Schedule some time to spend together doing fun, stress-free activities that don’t even hint at infertility. A trip to the park filled with babies in strollers might not be a good idea, but catching the late-night movie will give you both a break to have fun.
