Who is a Good Candidate for IVF Surrogacy?

by | October 13th, 2015

Surrogacy refers to the use of a third party female to provide eggs and/or carry the pregnancy to term. In vitro fertilization (IVF) surrogacy allows women who are unable to get pregnant or carry a pregnancy to full term, the opportunity to start a family. If you’re unable to conceive due to a preexisting medical condition or complication, then consider this overview on ideal candidates for IVF surrogacy.

What Does IVF Surrogacy Involve?

219511IVF surrogacy involves several steps in order to achieve a successful pregnancy. Once a surrogate female has been identified and screened for medical or psychological conditions. For gestational surrogacy, the eggs are harvested from the intended mother who is given hormones to stimulate the ovaries to produce an overabundance of healthy eggs. After the eggs have been retrieved during a minor surgical procedure, the eggs are fertilized using either the partner’s sperm or donor sperm. After the insemination process is complete, the embryos are implanted into the surrogate’s uterus for the duration of the pregnancy. {In traditional surrogacy, the eggs come from the same person who will carry the pregnancy.  The intended parents formally adopt the baby at the end of the pregnancy.

Candidate Requirements

Ideal candidates for IVF surrogacy can be divided into three major groups, including:

  • Women who have been advised against pregnancy due to a systemic illness, including heart disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal abnormalities, hypertension, or a previous history of cancer or radiation treatment.
  • Women who have undergone a hysterectomy or have congenital malformations, fibroids, or adhesions affecting the uterus
  • Homosexual male couples interested in conceiving

Women who are able to carry a pregnancy to term but do not produce viable eggs may often benefit from egg donation rather than in vitro fertilization surrogacy.

Whether you’re suffering from endometriosis or uterine fibroids or you’ve had your uterus removed via hysterectomy, IVF surrogacy may be the perfect solution.
